The Walkthrough

Step 1: Sign Up for Surfer SEO

What to do: Go to Surfer SEO and create an account. Choose the Essential plan ($99/mo) to start — it includes enough content credits for 2–3 optimized articles per week.

Why you’re doing it: Surfer analyzes the top-ranking pages for any keyword and tells you exactly what they include: word count, headings, keywords, related terms, images, and structure. Instead of guessing, you build content based on data.

What to expect: 5 minutes for account setup.

Step 2: Research Your Target Keyword

What to do: In Surfer, go to Content Editor and enter the keyword you want to rank for. Surfer analyzes the top 10–20 results and generates a content brief: recommended word count, headings to include, related keywords to mention, and a content score to aim for.

Why you’re doing it: This brief is your blueprint for beating the competition. It tells you exactly what the top-ranking pages have that you don’t.

What to expect: 2–3 minutes per keyword. The AI does the heavy lifting.

Step 3: Write or Optimize Your Content

What to do: Write your article using Surfer’s Content Editor, which shows a real-time content score. As you add recommended keywords and headings, your score goes up. Aim for a green score (70+). Use AI for drafting: give Claude the Surfer brief and say “Write a blog post targeting [keyword] that includes these headings and keywords: [paste Surfer’s recommendations].”

Why you’re doing it: The content score directly correlates with ranking potential. Higher score = better optimization = higher likelihood of ranking on page 1.

What to expect: 30–60 minutes per article when combining AI drafting with Surfer optimization. Much faster than writing and optimizing separately.

Step 4: Publish and Monitor

What to do: Publish the optimized article on your blog. In Surfer, use the SERP Analyzer to track your position for the target keyword over time.

Why you’re doing it: SEO results take 2–8 weeks to appear. Monitoring lets you see progress and identify opportunities to improve.

What to expect: Most well-optimized articles start climbing within 2–4 weeks. You may need to refresh content or add internal links to continue climbing.

Confidence Level

This workflow is Beta — Based on Best Available Knowledge. Surfer SEO is a widely used content optimization tool with a strong track record. Results depend on keyword difficulty, domain authority, and content quality.

What to Do If It Doesn’t Work

  • Score is high but still not ranking: Domain authority matters. New sites take longer to rank even with perfect optimization. Build backlinks and publish consistently.
  • AI content sounds robotic: Use AI for the first draft, then rewrite in your voice. Add personal examples, opinions, and expertise that AI can’t provide.
